All About Tillers

Whether you day sail or race there’s a good possibility that your tiller won’t last forever. Unless you bought your boat new and listened to us when we told you to keep it on the bow bag, and resting on the centerboard drum off the floor in the bow. As well as keep Vaseline on the end that goes in the rudder. Are you getting what I’m laying down? These tricks can definitely prolong the life of the tiller.

Finally, for the racers out there, and daysailers can enjoy this performance tip as well. Make sure your tiller fits tight. Please understand, that they are made out of wood and can expand and contract. If your tiller is loose in the rudder head then you need to tighten the bolts on the top of the rudder head. Otherwise, it’s like driving down the road with loose steering. Tighten that baby up, and get the most our of her.

Just my $0.02.

The sailboat’s rudder was one of its target structures; its engines were hidden beneath the hull. Every time the boat passes through the waves, the rudder creates friction in one direction and changes the direction of the boat.
